With the rapid development of Hong Kong's cryptocurrency market, more and more users have begun to contact cryptocurrency investment and use cryptocurrency for payment, which has also provided opportunities for fraudsters. We are here to remind the majority of users to be aware of the fraud flooding the crypto market, to avoid the loss of funds. Due to the irreversibility of blockchain transfer and anonymity of user information, once the corresponding transfer or account information is leaked, your funds may not be recovered!

In order to help users to prevent scams related to cryptocurrency transactions, BITHON has put together a series of common scams and solutions:

  • Bypassing the platform for private transactions

    • Common techniques:

Step 1: When the buyer contacts the seller, the seller will tempt the buyer to bypass the platform for private transactions by offering a price lower than the listed price on the platform

Step 2: Some buyers may agree to the seller's proposal and make a private deal in order to take advantage of the temporary discount

Step 3: The seller will ask the buyer to transfer the cryptocurrency to the wallet address provided by the seller to complete the payment

Step 4: Then the seller delays delivery/fails to deliver the goods/even lose contact after payment

  • Correct handling:

Do not indulge in small concessions to allow any seller to do a private deal. Since all transactions bypassing the BITHON’s platform will not be protected by the services and transactions of BITHON, BITHON has no obligation or responsibility to assist in any transaction dispute arising from any private transaction.

If users encounter sellers urging private transactions, please notify the customer service team as soon as possible to ensure the security of the trading of BITHON platform.

  • Scam SMS messages

    • Common techniques:

      • Step 1: Scammers send SMS messages to users and provide fraudulent web addresses in the name of "account termination" to entice users to click

      • Step 2: The user mistook it for an official message and entered his/her account number, password and double verification code (2FA) on the fake web page.

      • Step 3: The fraudster will import the sensitive information entered by the user into the real BITHON website or application login through automatic Settings

      • Step 4: The fraudster will transfer the user's assets to another account in the form of transfer/commodity trading or immediate withdrawal from the platform

    • Correct handling:

      • Do not click on any suspicious links and check the official website of BITHON "bithon.com.hk". If there is any uncertainty, users can contact the online customer service of BITHON or inquire to the official Telegram community of BITHON (please see the end of the article)

      • If the user discovers that his/her BITHON account has security concerns, please temporarily lock up the asset through the process of "Disable account" and contact customer service as soon as possible. The specific process is as follows: Login BITHON App -> select BITHON Wallet -> "Settings" -> "Disable Account" -> Read and agree to the restrictions on disabling accounts, click "Disable My Account" again

  • Network Phishing

    • Common techniques:Fraudsters will email users to inform them of problems with their accounts and ask them to click the link attached to the email to solve the problem. This link will direct users to a fake website similar to the BITHON website and require users to log in to obtain their accounts and passwords and steal their funds

    • Correct handling:

      • Set up an anti-phishing code and make sure the mail is from an official source

      • BITHON does not provide any login programs or websites other than the App, nor will we request your login information via email

      • Send an email address to the customer service team so that the system will determine whether it is from the official BITHON

      • Recommend that users bookmark frequently used web sites and avoid clicking on those from unknown sources

  • Fake customer service and staff

    • Common techniques: Scammers lurk in social networks (LINE, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, Discord, etc.), either sending messages to users or pulling them into a fake BITHON group (where there are many accomplices who chat with each other to create the illusion of popularity). They will impersonate the official staff or customer service staff, and attract users to send coins to a certain address in the name of the event, and then offer rewards. Users cannot get their cryptocurrency back until they send it to the address specified by the scammer

    • Correct handling:
